Good and Ill humor

by Dedh Quintal » Thu Aug 26, 2004 10:40 am

There is good and there is ill humour.

Should both be accepted ?

Comments like Kismat ho Gandu and Cum etc fall under ill humour!!

Accepting Ill humour or barnding it NV does not make one broad minded?

What do you say ?

Good humour is something which is finished now, because all the possible jokes and scenarios have been exhausted, and they are no longer funny.

So, now we have to think up new (types of) jokes, and thus we keep getting grosser and filthier and whatnot. I myself started reading and telling NV jokes bcuz people now do not laugh at simple clean jokes bcuz they have heard 'em all.

I dont think they are nice for us, bcuz they desensitise people, which is bad. Somewhat akin to watching too many Blue Films, after which I have seen guys have no interest in real life romance and such stuff, they only want fast cash.

Aha

by DQ » Thu Aug 26, 2004 11:51 am

Aha thats one way of looking at it.

Anyway you can have Jokes (NV) where appropriate, but I beleive for a laugh.

Not to ridicule someone, or unleash your fantasy for some female you know, or to scar her image.

Like wise small puns that make no sense, aka chilkan type can be used for humor. But only where appropriate.

You are in a family/corporate/social get together/ meeting and you start of Gandu / Pandu .... Woooh oh.

And then say come on guys its acceptable as we have run out of all other jokes :-/

And people who accept it are Broad minded ???

Baffling man.

Indeed!

And then these sort of people come and tell me that they cannot understand why people avoid them. Glop!

Ill humor to you may not be the same to me. What my mother finds vulgar and gross, I might find outrageously funny.

Humour is a largely subjective issue. It is rooted in exposure, mindset, age, situation (look at my sig), familiarity with language and whatnot! Given the extremely large number of factors on which humour depends, I would have to say that there is really no way by which we can choose to either accept or not accept a particular kind of humour as this itself shows our narrow-mindedness.

Please do not misinterpret this as encouraging stupid/vulgar humour; I am merely stating that it is a complex issue, which goes beyond how stupid or how vulgar the comment istelf is. Debating whether such humour should actually be allowed on these DBs is a different issue. Please do not confuse the two.

Finally..... all it comes down to is how funny you find it for yourself.

If something offends you, this again is a different issue!

I found MMasala's comment on kismat pretty funny myself!! I'm sorry you took offense.

i agree with Kenny on this. it all depends on how good/bad u find the humor to be. for me, the joke has to be funny n tht doesnt necessarily depend on how clean or gross or vulgar it is. if i cant laff at it, it isnt my brand of humor..

Well, ^^^ pretty much sums up what I was gonna write after reading the first few posts. Humor cannot really be generalised, what one person finds funny maybe offensive to another and vice versa. Therefore, everyone doesn't have the same sort of funny bone, so ppl just chill and enjoy yourself!!

P.S.: I know, my post makes no sense what-so-ever

Humour depends on both the speaker and the audience. IMO, there are three things essential for humour to be in place.

1. The Right Audience

2. The Right Timing

3. The Right Content

Any of these three is absent and humour becomes out of place. I would not brand humour as good or bad as it is something very subjective. For example, the kismat joke was not at all in bad taste.

Clicked submit by mistake.

Continuing from my last post, the kismat joke was not in bad taste for me, but DQ found it offensive. So in my context, the joke had all 3 ingredients, whereas in DQ's context, it lacked the right audience.

That was not a cryptic clue. That is an easy clue.

Returning RATS = STAR (That is RATS spelt backwards)

My two paise on the topic.

Humour is highly subjective. As most juntu here has agreed, what one person might find gross another finds humourous. For instance, one of my uncles who owns a poultry farm once remarked when he saw a group of women cross the road:

I have many chicks but none like these.

Now, some women might find that outrageously offending. But, I had a good laugh at the time. Then there is the infamous Ganpathrai joke. This one is an absolute classic. It is a very guy joke but I am sure a lot of guys would find it outrageous. To me, it is one of the highly creative ones.

Sure is hilarous, not intended to ridicule someone. No ill feelings good humour. Acceptable.
