IMG unveils plans for Hyderbad

IMG-Bharatha chairman interview

Hyderabad Stadia maintenence problem

Now comes the govt part :@

Congress to review the project

This Academy was proposed to be IMG's Academy for entire Asia and Africa and man it would have boosted the economy no end. If F1 and Disneyland had come too [ the projects which the new govt rejected] , it would have put Hyderabad on the world map :) . But the new govt wants to be associated as only pro-poor and it sees these projects as pro-rich  . They only want votes and not what is good for the Economy and sports. The problem here is though the middle class and above make up majority but they don't vote much while the poor vote in large numbers. The govts in India want to keep them at poor to make them a vote bank for them.

Some important components that the IMGB will set up in the first phase:

IMGB International School: IMGB will offer quality US-style education.

International performance Institute gym: Gym will provide athletes latest sports science training.

Golf Academy: The David Leadbetter Golf Academy will offer clients world-class golf course on the lines of the DLGA in Florida, which has produced 22 national champions.

Cricket Academy: The Academy will provide playing and practice pitches, world-class training facility and coaching rooms for one-on-one consultations.

Tennis facility: The facility, on the lines of Nick Bollettieri?s, will consist of hard and clay courts, one stadium court.

Basketball Academy: It will be based in the Indoor Stadium complex at Gachibowli. Additional practice courts for sport specific footwork and training will be located in the fitness centre.

Aquatics Academy: The swimming and diving academy will operate from the pool in Gachibowli and will cater a small but focussed group of swimmers.

Soccer Academy: The academy will feature practice fields at the Balayogi complex.

Dormitories, resort and spa, medical centre and a medical conditioning centre will also come up.

That was on the lighter side.

Rock Star...I'm not siding with the new government on this issue..their policy implementation is still at an infancy stage and with a thumping majority, they have a long 5 years in office. And it doesn't even take a day to take a complete U-Turn in policies.

What I'm trying to put across here is the rationale behind pro-poor policies. There are reasons beyond vote bank politics for the same. First of all, agreed that the IMG academy, Formula-1, Disneyland etc. will put Hyderabad on the world map. But when we think on these issues, have we ever given a thought to whether we're ready for the impact? Let me outline a few points here.

Infrastructure : Having the academy, F-1 track & Disneyland in Hyderabad isn't enough by itself. Do we have good roads that lead to these venues? Do we have enough hotel rooms to provide for the heavy tourist influx that'll follow these projects? Do we have a robust public transport system to handle the crowds? NO.

Security : Do we have security forces competent enough to handle security for such large bonanzas? We've seen a few militant groups active in Hyderabad and such things are going to be the first target for these groups.

Resources : These projects would take up mammoth resources. We have a heavy drinking water problem. What about a million people descending into Hyderabad over one weekend? Do we have enough power for the projects to run?

and finally....

Priorities : Having Formula-1 cars whiz through a Hyderabad track might be exotic for us..but is it the same for a drought affected farmer being crushed by money lenders? The govt. effort that would go into these projects could well be diverted to providing free primary education in good schools; feeding hungry mouths and opening up avenues which generate mass employment.

I again repeat that I'm not supporting the government or its policies. This was just a counterview to rock star's view.
