Bio technology is seen as the next big boom, but it is anticipated as the kind of boom that would sustain, unlike the IT boom where things went massively wrong, particularly in what is been told as the valuation of sevices. Bio-tech on the othe hand would be extremely capital intensive, if not competetive. Lots of job openings in the higher segment would be created. Interms of revenue it might overtake IT, but won\'t be as diversified as IT is. Bio- tech might hit the peek after the new patent regime is brought by 2005 in India.

for a few more opinions to hit this board... i thought its good if people understood what biotechnology is... i didnt have a clue b4... \"Biotechnology is the use of living organisms (or their products) to develop foods, medicines, and other useful products, basically to modify human health and human environment\". as for my opinion, i think IT will rule.. think abt it.. u r gonna use IT services even in bio-technology. i agree there is a slump in IT right now.. but my personal belief is that IT will bounce back.

Yes, IT will rule because IT needs other avenues for it to rule. Actually, \"rule\" is a wrong word. It can suppliment and in many cases replace various mundane manual processes by a putting in place a faster and more efficient system. Any sector, has to make IT a part of the core operations. Banking is the best example, one of the slowest banks in terms of rendering service to its costumers - Punjab National Bank, today is perhaps one of the most IT efficient banks. A credit from PNB used to take atleast 48hrs, today u get the same in the same day, in 2 languages. Overall, IT has been harnessed extremely well by banks. For bio - tech several software products would be developed and areas like system intergration, network management, datawaehousing and data mining would be the prime area of focus IT. In terms of job oppurtunities, there is nothing to overtake IT as there is core developement and outsoucing involved. But, Bio tech would for sue provide very high paying jobs that would be extremly challenging, as the new patent regime would demand nothing but constant innovation for all the pharma and biotech players.<br>Keep this board running, its an important subject

i cannot comment abt whether it can overtake or not but.......
well, biotech is a vague term, this term bioX i coined from the speech of the president of MIT at my university one year back. it has been there since quiet long, just coz the media doesn\'t have anything to write about they do this-this is my opinion -not his. i never believed in the concept of a hot field, i say this though i am in bioengg. whatever u do, do it to the best of ur ability in ur field. tell u something?? u need a master\'s or phd to work in the area, its not as simple as u can get a diploma from NIIT or Aptech!! most of the start-ups work with around 20 best guys mostly having PhD\'s. and ofcourse this isn\'t instant money- i guess thats what u r looking for!! there r companies that ended producing nothing in terms of research after working for more than 10yrs!! to give an idea of time involved-viagra was discovered when people found a side effect(erectile)while testing for the treatment of heart diseases(i dont know of what kind) in the early 70\'s and u should be knowing when it is commercialised

Thats what i said, in my reply here, that job opening would be available for high end jobs, unlike what IT give. This field is high on investment, and higher on return on investment also. Once, you busines in Biotech clicks, its sure to sustain.

Look, lets not get into specifics of anything. Bio infomatics is in nacent stages of developement, it would take a while for contributions from the bioinformatics to leap from the laboratories to the market. Areas like these and Biotech has got lot of scope in R&D activies, but again this purly depends on funding of R&D initiatives. Coporates have started to increase the share on R&D expenditure only recently. Companies specialising in bioinformatics would probably be some sort of subsidary units to the parent company, which would be a biotech. Frankly, speaking, experts feel that this kind of differentiation would disappear and eveything would come in the ambit of Bio-tech itself.

i dont mean anything personal......i understand what is biotech and its different sub disciplines and feel biotech is a vague term as i have mentioned before. its like calling, i am an engineer!! u got to be specific abt what engineer u are or what kinda work u do. i say this for the benifit of people who will read the thread in the future.........if u just keep saying Biotech and never talk abt specifics.......people will feel lost......the discussion will become more useful when someone in the sub-disciplines comments abt the area......lets wait for others to comment instead of making it a conversation between Pavan and Vivek.

young medical graduates are turning their attention towards this field nowadays. because getting speciality for them is very competitive. even after getting speciality life is not assured for them. this is a bright hope for them . infact i have seen this practically.IIT gives Mtech Biotechnology course which is valuble one.

They also provide courses in Bio tech, biomed is the only available one i guess in IIT.

Please read Bombay IIT is conducting yearly BIOMEET exam at central level both engineering graduates anmd medical graduates can comprte this exam and get in to Mtech biomedical enghineering cource so all gentlemen be aware of this
