Taste the quintessential tiffins of Andhra

by sunny » Fri Aug 29, 2003 10:09 am

Chittrannam (lemon rice) is my favorite. Idli, dosa , vada, pongal, various baths. Who can resist not tasting each and every item! I once ate in a North-Indian restaurant and man it really sucked. No kaaram, no uppu, no masala. I really pitied them. And talk about Karnataka. They have brinjal in each and every item, I don\'t know why. Do they get them for free or what! Here too the same nos. Tamil Nadu rice the size of pearls. No Andhrite is gonna like that and Kerala? Don\'t know much about it man. So the inference North or South Andhra stands out and I\'m proud to ba a part of it. Btw, vada & sambar are my fav too. I want all the members of fullhyd.com to post their fav tiffins and integrate the multifariousness of various parts of Andhra.

Yaar, I heard that \" PULLIHORA \" is the common Telugu name for lemon rice... So from where did you get this \'Chittrannam\' name for lemon rice? In which part of AP, do they use this name for lemon rice?

Is kaaram, Kharapudi? If so, I simply love it! They do it the best in Vijayawada. My favorite is Rava Dosa with coconut chutney and Andhra style sambhar. Not the kind of sambhar they do in other southern states with sinister looking pieces of egg plant floating in thick mud like gravy. There were days when Andhra tiffins were not as expensive as they are now. A modest tiffin say, at Kamat or Tajmahal, makes a sizeable hole in the pocket. But, they are good. My family loves to have Andhra tiffin at least once a month, we really enjoy the variety of items on the menu.

My No.1 choice is MLA peserettu at Chutney\'s. Besides, I like all kinds of dahi bade available in Hyderabad (especially in the Ramadan month the variety is good).

I tasted better Andhra food at Malgudi. But who told you that rice in Tamil Nadu is pearl-like, my friend?

1)I liked the lunch and dinner in Abhiruchi in SD Road.
<br>
2)Southern Spice in Banjara Hills is OK.
<br>
3)Best and satisfying south Indian lunch I had at Taj Banjara for just Rs. 175/- per head. Beleive me, it is wonderful.
<br>
4)kamath is ok i have almost gone to all kamath. the kamath near cloack tower is really tasty especially the AC Hall.but kamath lingapur( 3 star hotel) begumpet is toooo costly for its quality and taste.In karnataka food they add sweet in everything
<br>
5)the bisi belabath in ONCE UPON A TIME IN GREENPARK is really wonderful beleive me they give it just for 40 rupees in 5 star comforts.
<br>
6) never the less not to forget to tell the vegetable spring rolls and vegetable soft noodles in nankins restaurent is wonderful they provide too much in quantity. if you order for one plate it caters for 3 people.so be careful dont waste after paying money.
<br>
7)PARADISE CHICKEN BIRIYANI is one of the good one but it caters for 3 people
<br>
8) ginger chicken in BAWARCHI with their biriyani is unbeatable but you have to go early otherwise they will be finished out.
<br>
9)tripti mess in karkhana main road is one of the best south indian based small simple and clean restaurent.
<br>
10) ramakrishna restaurent near railway station is really good.
<br>
11) the 70mm paper dosa at taj belsons is cheaper rated at rs 35 only

That\'s not true my friend. There\'s no lemon in Pulihara It\'s made with another recipe. And I didn\'t mention Upma in the list \'cos that\'s one item I can\'t stand.

Yes buddy, you are right. Pulihora & Chitrannam (lemon rice) are they same in the coastal regions. But here in \'Rayalseema\' they perceived differently. In the coastal areas & in Hydearabd, lemon rice is a type of pulihora. Another type is made using tamarind.

Minapattu is my personal favourite tiffin right there along with allam pesarattu with upma (BTW, minapatttu is different from dosa - or as it is more commanly known in the neigbouring state as dosai) :)). LOL.

Ummm... Yumm... All the stuff that you all guys mentioned - those dosas and vadas and idli and utappam with sambar and kobaripachadi and allam pachadi and the mouth watering aroma that pulls you in into our resturants and you do not know which ones to order! The crisp dosa or onion dosa, or is it crisp vada, all these with sambar made at (apna woh blue fox ke neche ki tiffin place, kounsi hai kuclha bayya? ) that restaurant... THIS IS A PUNISHMENT TO NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THESE PLACES OF OURS . WAH... feel like throwing tantrums for the love of my motherland. Will understand it, \'mother\' hainaa !

Dear Sunny, have you ever eaten at a proper Chinese joint and seen Tandoori Chicken being served there? Or at a Mexican joint have you ever ordered a masala dosa? I guess NOT.
<br>
<br>
So dude , how can you ever think of getting kaaram, uppu or whatever to be served in a North Indian restraunt?
<br>

Instead of shooting such comments about the food in other parts of the country you should realise and appreciate the diversity in tastes that the country has to offer.

Have you been to Tirupati? Which part of Andhra is it in? Yes, Rayalaseema. They don\'t know what pulihora is but they call it as chitrannamu. They always make it with lemon and never with tamarind.

Someone talked about different pulihoras but in the Rayalseema region there is one and only thing, i.e. Chitrannamu which is nothing but lemon rice.
