Traffic free day

by bornhyderabadi » Mon Sep 22, 2003 3:37 pm

On Monday, Europe is celebrating the annual \"car-free day\". I think it\'s a very novel and unique way to reduce pollution.
<br>
<br>
I think we need to have something like this in India. Since in India, we have 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers and four wheelers we can have a \"NO traffic day\", i.e. people can use only public transport like buses (although they also contribute to pollution) and encourage people to use bicycles or tricycles to commute to places or a much better way would be to walk.
<br>
<br>
I think even a day without polluting vehicles on roads will give enough breathing space and people will see and feel the difference of having a pollution free environment, and will encourage people into cultivating more environmentally friendly ways of leading their lives.
<br>
<br>
What do you say?

Hi BH, this may not work in our country since our massive population needs to go to work/office/school/ factory. People will be inconvenienced and upset. There can be a big chaos.

Unfortunately, there is always a mental block for us Indians. That is why we are not developing like the developed world, though we have the full capacity.

The idea of traffic free day is excellent. Unless the concept is out into practice one would not know the pros and cons. We sure need to experiment with it ideally to see the outcome of it. I am surely for it. Hope our CM will be the pioneer among the ministers to implement this novel ideal, which also conserves fuel, and give us a forced physical experience to cycle down to office or schools.

Hey, people in those parts of the world also go to schools, offices and factories. How come they can manage without chaos? Where there is will there is a way, and in India vast majority of people use public transport and I am proud to say that public transport in India is one of the best in entire world. So, it should not be that much of a problem.
<br>
<br>
Most of the taxis and 3 wheelers in our country use adultrated petrol and the lorries use disel which is a very crude petroleum by product. With these vehicles on the road you are destined to have pollution. Believe me, let there be one day without these vehicles, and others like scooters, cars, vans. You will see and feel the difference.

Europe has excellent public transport system which remains under utilized. If all the Europeans (irrespective of country) take to public transport as a mode of travel then their infrastructure can bear the load. Not in case of India. We already have a heavily burdened infrastructure which will break down in a few years. The existing public transportation is not sufficient to transport all commuters.
<br>
<br>
Even with vehicles on road we see people hanging from buses. Imagine what will happen if all the vehicles go off the road. Did ya all forgot those Auto strikes? College students standing on the rear gaurd of buses? And never ask anyone to ride a bike on city roads. Bikes and pedestrians have no right of way on Hyderabad roads, not even on foot paths and Zebra crossings. You never know when you\'ll be knocked down by a speeding bus.
May the Fries be with you!

I know not many know the meaning of \"right of way\" here, but again it\'s the sorry state of affairs and this board is not about it. If there is no traffic, then there is no risk of anyone being run over, and the speed of vehicles allowed to move on those days must be regulated as is being done elsewhere. So with slow moving traffic, I don\'t see any major issue.
<br>
<br>
As I said earlier, where there is a will there will be a way. If you take each and everything as an obstacle then nothing constructive can ever happen. And please don\'t give examples of college students. These guys who are on the rear of buses must most probably be heading to some movie. So there is no harm if they miss out on this oppurtunity. Most probably they will miss college, anyway.

I am all for it. Majority of the people are so concerned about day to day living that protecting and maintaining a clean environment certainly takes a back seat in our country.

We must always make a beginning somewhere and, sure, where there is a will there is a way.
