Sunny, glad to know that you at least know where to start with. That\'s like winning half the battle! As for the hard work, well, there\'s no escaping from that. Best Wishes!
To get into bioinformatics, the basic mantra is one should have strong backing one of the two fields and a basic knowledge in another. The two subjects, of course, are Molecular Biology/Molecular Genetics and Computer Science. Or a professional degree in medicine or veterinary science (MBBS or BVSc) or computer science (BTech) is also good. A word of caution, don\'t just join any of those mushrooming bioinformatics institutes. Most of them are no good (I have been to at least 3 of them in Hyderabad, when I last visited). Since, you said your sister was contemplating to join MBBS, I guess, she has just finished Intermediate (BPC). It’s not a good idea or a wise step to join a bioinformatics course with the knowledge of biology one gets in the intermediate. The best thing would be to join a degree course with MolBiology/MolGenetics or Biotechnology. Then she can join Masters/Diploma in Bioinformatics. As far as I know, the Pune one or the Madurai Kamraj one is good (it’s difficult to get a seat there but not impossible). So, is the bioinformatics offered as one of the option at BSc level? I don’t think many of our Universities have the infrastructure or the faculty required for it. The CDFD, CCMB Hyderabad center seemed to be pretty good.
As for the future, I am not very sure in India but in USA, it’s a promising field for at least 12 more years. What we have finished is just sequencing the human genome. The proteins are not yet identified. And only about 4000 disease-gene associations have been well-established so far. We still have a long way to go. If you are wondering, on what basis I am saying all this I have been in this field for the last 3 years after studying in England. My research primarily dwells on gene regulation.
OK, coming to a lighter discussion, Hulk was for kids mainly, that too American kids. As X-men or Daredevil or Spiderman, it is also based on a comic book. Yeah, I agree, the SFX were far from expected and were actually shoddy.
