Why do we have to flock abroad?

by truelies » Thu Jun 05, 2003 4:48 pm

Come across lots of students like from hyd\'bad in Toronto, all into odd jobs... They come from well to do families abroad, where they never had to put a foot down, but doing the dishwashing thing here. Sets me wondering why we have to come abroad at all...
Cheers!

well... i think they are doing much better than the \"ameer baap ke bigde hua shehzade\" in india.. who think hitting the pubs in their dad owned car/jeep/suv is cool. washing dishes is not a demeaning job. anyways... personally.. i never had the craving to \"flock\" abroad.

If it is \'ameer baap/maa ke bigide huye..\' then its fine enough, we get to learn to become independent and earn our living and learn the dignity of labour apart from learning to appreciate the importance of having the ameer baap/maa/bahan/bhai/and all the rest of the family and the possible love that we cud have had w/ our families inspite of the loosers that we grew up to be going abt in phorren cars to the pubs with babes on either of the sides!! It does seem to be teaching something, um?

What\'s wrong with washing dishes? What\'s so menial about it? Its high time we start believing in dignity of labor. May be, I am deviating from the main issue here but... I work at a Children\'s Hospital and its not at all uncommon for the janitors and doctors to mix freely during the lunch-time and other off-work hours. I can never imagine that happening in India. I think washing dishes and being self-reliant is lot better than being a parasite on one\'s ancestral or parental earnings. Well, as for flocking abroad, to quote the cliche\' yet again, Brain drain is BETTER than brain in the drain! Sad, but very true.

to escape... discrimintion based on caste, sex etc., reservations and more recently pollution. what is the value of an Indian life? hardly anybody protests an unnatural death and i feel like shooting those who say it\'s okay, we have a lot of population.

Anil,
your views are appreciable. but the message I believe is talking about \'y the hell should we go so far to do that job\'. Infact there are so many indians who are selling their ancestral property just for the sake of being told that they are living abroad specially to the US.

Hey Dharmi, \'y the hell should we go so far to do that job\'---I didn\'t get u at this line. As far as I know nobody goes to USA for washing dishes or for doing odd jobs, they are just earning money for their living apart from studing master\'s there.

hmmm....sorry, I was just complimenting to what anil said in one context. what you said is 100% true. but when I was going thru all the messages in the forum, just happened to remember few of my friends telling about their relatives craving to settle off at the US just for name sake, and their feats. Its a well known fact, its worth it studying and working abroad, but at the same time, people are tending to settle there. Its success individually. If you can see the most talented vvip\'s in the US, you can see more number of Indians in their foreigners list.

Hey ZC you have done that again man...
Guys let me say something being experienced immigrant.
1.there is nothing wrong for students to work and pay for education, infact this can be adopted at home as well to ease off the burden from the parents. 2. besides migration is something like a personal choice; can\'t be judged by others. our country guarantees freedom for travel to all citizens. Only when you travel abroad you will understand the importance of being Indian, it expands your vision and capabilities; and most likely you will be better off.

Dharmi, Smocking Rock and Bull, everyone of you make a valid argument. Frankly, I seldom see such balanced views. I understood what Dharmi is trying to say. But isn\'t it true that the same guy who doesn\'t even care to wash his underwear or his eating plate back home in India is too willing to do any odd job in USA! So, my point is, in a way leaving the country is changing the way we (especially the youth) see certain things or take them for granted. One more thing I have observed is, the couples here (especially THE husband) help out each other in all domestic chores (which is something we don\'t see very often in India). Finally, its good to one\'s personality to get exposed to different work/study environs and culture etc and not be limited by parochial boundaries. Yes, one cannot condone the ways of certain people who just live to land in the USA! But again, everyone for himself! I don\'t think anyone can do anything about that.

Yeah I agree with you Anil!, the couples there always help each other. And Bull! you have made an interesting point \"it expands your vision and capabilities\" thats true, I mean if you are going abroad to study in a university, apart from you being from India you are actually representing India there, so automatically you as an intellectual will try to give the best of your performance. Hey Dharmi! at another point of view you are also correct some people are doing those odd jobs, but just think why are they doing so.

A. Bcos these people have been dumped there by some fake consultants, who promised them good jobs. There are some instances where there passports are snatched. (I once read in a newspaper that about 40 people where house arrested and were forced to jobs not of there caliber, but atlast they were rescued with the help of some Indian Association there in USA).

B. Bcos these people are not educated, I mean they can\'t do other things bcos they can\'t do things other than these, I know some people who have gone there with fake certificates, just to earn some quick money.
