Why is being an engineer/doctor so important? What determine

Can\'t I be doing something else? Why is it that almost everyone wants to become only an engineer or a doctor? Why are people with an impression that only these subjects are good? Most often people choose other subjects when they don\'t get into one these two.

I did get an engineering seat 17 years back. Since I was not able to pay the donation in lacs, I took a Travel & Tourism course from Geneva, and believe me, 3 days after I got my results I got a job. I have travelled the world, I have worked abroad, and am now well-settled with a top travel company drawing a very handsome salary and leading a good social life. I know many doctors and engineers who are struggling to meet their ends due the heavy competition, etc. I know many engineers working as salesmen for FMGC companies...

social prestige !! \'mera beta engineer hai, america mein padne waala hai, dowry achhi milegi\' or meri beti doctor hai, koi acha sa green card holder ke liyye ready hai, dowry kam hogga\'. so, essentially, its for social prestige and for dikhav and for money earning machine. any other reasons, guys? for simple edu? and ofcourse for ones survival too !

I believe most of the students end up in either engg or doctor course just for the guarantee part of it. When bulk of the population is middle class, the usual mind set is to go for something that will most certainly give u a decent quality of life. If it were just the money, u will find more people in politics ;)

What kinda guarantee? Thousands of them (engineers) every year. Now, the lab technician, mechanic and other shop floor workers need a polytechnic or ITI diploma. In a few years the requirement will be BE/BTECH. If it\'s not a software related job, you don\'t get paid much, and to get into software you needn\'t be an engineer!! The days of people calling Engineer Babu Garu or Engineer Amma Garu have long gone!!

Anyone with determination and hardwork can achieve success. Parents should understand that their children should excel and specialize in a field rather than go mad preparing to become a doctor or engineer....
