I think he/she/it means something on the lines of Genral Knowledge or something. But the fat remains that if all those taking the EAMCET had any General Knowledge or Common Sense they would not be taking that exam in the first place.

Damn right!!!!  When I was in a coaching center, after 9/11 many people used to come and ask me what exactly is Pentagon and WTC.I mean come on......WTC was one of the most famous building in the world.

And I would say half of the people who write the exam do not know whats happening around the world.

And I misquoted Jackal. See what happens when you don't quote text right? The effect filters down to generations of quoted text. :D

EAMCET=Engineering,Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test

The main problem is the kind of pressure the students are put thru to take this test. The questions maybe pretty ok,most of em answerable...but the students sometimes end up messing up with the papers only due to the sheer amount of stress and tension they face..Hope the situation changes...

WTC is an office builiding 110 stories high and not the tallest building in the world. Pentagon is a freaking government office. why shld anyone know these two? Outside civil engineering profession, what importance do they have for anyone :?

But I do agree that many students donot have the kind of GK one needs to have at that age, but for that we have to blame the parents and our education system rather than the students themselves.

I do not quite agree, Mayavi. You and I are products of that very same Education system, and we did alright. Today if the Indian professionals are in demand it is because of that very Education system.

Besides, do you think that this problem is prevalent only in India? Even in the US, which is perceived as the place to be by so many Hyderabadis, most people would not know the names of even ten of their cities. In fact, to most Americans, the world is America.

It is not the system that is to blame. It is how much effort the person makes to enhance himself. However bad the system is notwithstanding there is something very wrong with any educated Indian if he/she cannot name all the states, the state capitals, and the union territories that we have in India. And this is a very widespread thing. The people I meet and work with are all graduates of very good institutions, and over 90% of them would not be able to name all states, state capitals, or union territories.

Who is to blame here? If you do not even know stuff as basic as this (probably 9/11 is not something that you should expect any non-American to be appalled at) then do not go around blaming the system. Yes, the system has its faults (what system does not?) but it cannot be the scapegoat each time.

General Paper as I meant was not to know about WTC and America its self as world. To me I think atleast 10% of the current affairs should be known by the students. Its a way to know the world. I know its difficult to strive in this current competitive world, but i dont feel its so much to know and remeber of wats happening around you.

Full hyd and DB members keep me posted and am proud to be a part of this wonderful rown down in here.

There are many Non-returning Indians (am one amongst 'em) across the world who debate on the political situation in India who never have been a part of the constitution in any way (thou I am). These people talk of refining India. Am I diverting the topic ? prolly yea....

general paper ????

by Reality. » Tue May 03, 2005 2:40 pm

well as a person who has een the grind I think i can give my views on the topic.

I think a general paper can be added to the proffesional entrance tests , and i know quite a few of them have them. for ex.. Jipmer has an english test on the same lines as the GRE verbal. Manipal used to have a english and Gk paper other than the subjects. AFMC has a GK paper along with the subjects.

But given all those things I know know of institutes which have choacing classes for english and GK for the ppl preparing for these entrances. so we have made it an art form in AP to institutionalise and create syllabi for subjects like GK which can then be cramed like any other subject for these tests.

The problem lies both with the students, teachers and the parents.

how many teachers themselves know answers to most current affairs issues? most of them are just graduates who just cram the lessons themselves and go on to teach the students.

How many parents spend enough time with their children discussing social issues and current topics? or actually share their own experiences of youth with their children instead of watching the crappy serials on the idiot box. How many parents actually care if their kid knows any of these things?

and finally , how many kids themselves are interested in knowing such stuff rather than talking about who's sleeping with who in bollywood, tollywood and their own neighbourhood.

so i guess its an individual choice and the ones who dont care less about any of this stuff will live happily in their own world oblivious to everything else. thats the only end to this topic. so finally its each for his own.

Please excuse the very obvious grammatical and spelling mistakes in the previous post. I am weak at both.

Oh for god sakes guys, that WTC thing was just an example.I had many such experiences, just because those guys are studious doesnt mean they shouldnt have a general idea of whats going around in the world. All they are interested in doing is study 18 hours a day, thats madness.18 hours is just pushing it.I know they want to come up in life and all that crap but having some fun isnt wrong.

When I go for giving exams,I barely study,I enjoy a lot the day before the exam(Probably party).I dont cram right 3 hours before the exams(I used to see atleast 7 out of 10 people doing this in India).I still manage to get A's and proper grades. And I DO have the general idea about the world and I DO have GK.

hello jackal,

I agree with a lot of what you say, but just wanted to point out that getting 'A's and proper grades isnt the same as being placed among the top 10 in a state. ( Hell even then you might not get a seat of your choice in a college of your choice.:) . for example take the medical PG exam where the top ranker had to go to court to have that right to chose.)

why so much talk-shock over such a small thing? its a pretty open-shut case.

Corporate Colleges= EVIL

EAMCET = UNJUST

Parents = MISINFORMED + MISLED + VICTIMS OF GROSS HYPE AND MEDIA REPORTS

Students = BRAINLESS PRODUCTS OF THE SYSTEM WHO FOR RATS' ASS SAKE CAN'T THINK WITH A CREATIVE BENT AND ARE OH-HELL-YEAH UNSUITABLE FOR ANY PRIVATE CORPORATE SECTOR JOB.

The Crackednut = Brainless product of the aforesaid system!

please do continue to rant...
