Great Disaster

by visalandhra » Mon Dec 27, 2004 10:28 am

Hi friends,

Its sad to hear that over 10,000 people died across 6 countries in the SE Asia including our country in Earthquake mishap. In Indonesia all the tourist spots were ashed away in the tides of sea.In iIndia its b'cse of high density over the sea shores.over 2400 ppl died only in TN.so from now onwrds government should restrict in giving the permission to build houses near sea shores.

Most of the dead people are the fishermen lot. not many lives have been lost in the urban areas ....its the small towns and villages by the sea that have been worst hit.

th toll keeps rising

It is indeed sad that such an incident happened towards the end of 2004 :( :( with so many innocent lives lost in the worst form of earthquake to hit the planet in 40 years

Tsunami is a series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that displaces the water column vertically. A tsunami can have a wavelength in excess of 100 km and period on the order of one hour.Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions etc can generate tsunamis.

It can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created. when earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the area is displaced from its position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass, which acts under the influence of gravity, attempts to regain its equilibrium resulting in this phenomenon

Let us pray for all the families who lost their dear ones.

But when they occur, they leave a trail of destruction, causing heavy damage to life and property. The major ones -- the Prince William Sound, Alaska, in March 1964, and the one generated off the coast of Chile in 1960 – caused havoc over large distances. Hundreds of people died when a huge wave travelling at a speed of 750 km per hour smashed Japan in 1960, following a series of quakes in Chile on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

Indeed a sad day... 2400 died in Indian and the death toll will only raise. Some islands in A & N are completely cut off with no communication links... so we have to wait and see.

Thats regressive thinking. you dont have to restrict construction on sea shores, but find ways to minimize destruction. There are many ways to avoid such destruction; placing sensors in sea bed, constructing check dams to break the tidal waves etc are few. These things are done in Japan and US which are prone to Tsunamis. Since this is a first in India, we dont have such measures in place.
